Een paard of paarden, zeker de traditionele rassen zoals de Pura Raza Española of PRE, waren en zijn nog steeds diepgeworteld in de cultuur en een symbool van status en nationale trots. Sia en Diva stammen af van deze door Spaanse edellieden gefokte paarden. Voor hetzelfde geld, of misschien voor minder geld, hadden we twee, niet raszuivere of cruzados, gekocht. Khaan en Remco lopen met de camera, dan eens voor me, om me dan een tijdje later weer gezwind voorbij te steken. Hun topsnelheid ken ik niet, hun gemiddelde snelheid berekent over de beweegtijd is 5,7 km/u. Bo loopt het merendeel van de tijd met Remco, haar gemiddelde is 5,5 km/u. Ik ben verbaasd en trots, des te meer omdat we er al 4500 hoogtemeters hebben opzitten. Talrijke pogingen om Sia tot meer snelheid aan te zetten resulteren in meer dan 600 kilo onverzettelijkheid, als aan de grond genageld blijft ze staan, pas als ik de spanning van het touw haal komt ze na een tijdje terug in beweging om in haar eigen tempo verder te gaan. Andere passages zijn rotsig of steil, of beiden. Menigmaal monster ik de moeilijke passage en tracht ik in te schatten of Sia er langs kan, één misstap en er glijdt of stort, een wit grijze massa naar beneden, al dan niet met veel erg óf met fatale afloop. Gelukkig is ze koel in het hoofd, eigengereid en koppig. Karaktertrekken die me gerust stellen. De bermen staan vol witte en gele bloemen, ook andere kleuren zijn in mindere mate aanwezig. De grassen zijn stug, de struiken hard en stekelig, pas als er water in de buurt is worden ze sappig en knapperig, Sia is er dol op. Het asfalt is oud en zit vol putten en verwarmt de zolen van onze stapschoenen, de omgeving is adembenemend! Achter me klakken de hoeven van Sia ritmisch en monotoon. Bo en de jongens lopen voor me uit, vrolijk keuvelend, hun tred is licht, bijna dansend.
